NOTE- When growing from seed the degree of intensity of the silvery blue colour will vary between individual seedlings and a range of seedlings varying from grey green to bright glaucous blue is usual. A magnificent sight of silver blue-green spruce. Rated one of the most popular evergreens. It grows well while young and matures at 50-75'; 10-'20' spread in the landscape, up to 135' and 35' spread in the wild. (Hardy in zones 2-7) • Displays its unique silvery blue-green color year-round. • Withstands wind better than most spruces due to a wide-spreading and moderately deep root system. • Is a long-lived specimen. • Features needles that are stiff, prickly and roughly 1–1" in length. • Provides privacy and a windbreak when planted in a row. • Yields light brown, 3–4" cones which hang downward on the branches and are concentrated in the upper crown. • Grows in a columnar, pyramidal shape. • Wildlife Value • This spruce provides food and shelter for siskins, nuthatches and crossbills. crossbills. History/Lore The Colorado blue spruce is such a delight that nature seems to have kept it a well-guarded secret for a very long time. It was not until 1862 that this spectacular species was discovered growing in enchanted meadows and stream sides high up in the Rocky Mountains. Once found, the fame of this blue spruce spread quickly, and today it is one of our most widely planted landscape trees as well as the state tree of Colorado. When writing Handbook on Conifers in 1969, Henry Tuescher, curator emeritus of the Montreal Botanical Garden, called the Colorado blue spruce one of the five finest conifers. Tuescher gave no reasons for this honor except for the tree's exceptional beauty. =g=g=g=g=g=g=g=g=g=g Germination Instructions for SOWING Colorado Blue Spruce seeds need no pretreatment or stratification before sowing. Fill trays or pots with quality potting soil and firm down gently. Spread seed across the surface; around 10 in a 10 cm pot is ideal. Cover with 3 mm of soil and gently firm down. Keep soil damp, not soaking wet or dried out. Place pots or trays on a warm windowsill or in a warm conservatory. Germination should occur at 1–3 weeks. =s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s==s=s=s=s=s=s=s= Free shipping to USA and Canada on most of our seeds Add this item to your cart and keep shopping-- at https://www.bonanza.com/booths/Greenoakie =s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s=s==s Shipping of Seeds and Cuttings: Orders are shipped via Canada Post Mail unless otherwise specified.
