THIS MONTH'S COVER: You won't recognize these young people, but in a few years' time you may see them at the Comedie- Francaise when you visit Paris or, without stirring from your homeland, on the screen. They are three out of a select five thousand in France who study in two hundred dif- ferent drama schools, and Rene Simon, the director of their school, has great hopes for them. Twenty-four-year-old Jean-Pierre Darene, in the foreground, had a part in a recent film, Liberte Surveillee (On Probation), and plans to make his career in the cinema. He would like to play what he calls "intense roles." Claude Arnold (right), eighteen, goes in for "vicious ingenue" roles, and recently went on tour in Algeria with the Comedie- Francaise's Maurice Escande. Twenty-year-old Jane Barry (left), a jeune premiere type, has already played with success on the Paris stage. Whatever dreams these three may have had on entering school were soon swept aside for long and relentless work. On page 42 Rene Simon and Mine. Dussane, another celebrated drama teacher, describe how they train their students for one of the world's most competitive careers.
NEWS FROM PARIS:
Under the Paris Rooftops: Paule de Beaumont's monthly diary: Strange universe--The fruit of bitterness--Kingdom w/the bull.
How to Become a French Cook: Home cooking in Brittany. By Countess Guy de Toulouse-Lautrec.
PATTERNS OF POWER: A French General Analyzes Nuclear-Age Strategy: The spectacular development of nuclear weapons and guided missiles has radically altered the conditions for starting a war. Contrary to general opinion, it is the attacked --and not the attacker--who is in the more favourable position, provided that he has sufficient means for immediate reprisal. By General Pierre Gallois.
INTERVIEWS WITH MODERN PAINTERS: BERNARD BUFFET Discusses Woman in Art: In his answers to questions given by the art- critic Pierre Berge on the representation of women in painting and sculpture, one of the most controversial painters of our time makes the first public statement of his views on art.
A VICTIM OF THE COLD WAR: BERLIN: The City with a Broken Heart: Dreary poverty in the East, gaudy prosperity in the West--and on both sides, insecurity and isolation.
HAUTE COUTURE: Realites Fashion Awards: A group of ten prominent American and French women of taste sets the standard of elegance for winter 1958-9.
THE LIVING THEATRE: How France's Stars Are Made: Realites has asked two of France's most distinguished drama teachers to tell the inside story of their craft. First Rene Simon (who taught Brigitte Bardot and Jean-Pierre Aumont) shows how he trains his students--or rather spurs them relentlessly to train themselves. Then Mine. Dussane (who taught Maria Casares and Daniel Gelin) describes a year of preparation for the nerve-racking exams of the Paris Conservatoire.
BEHIND THE MIDDLE-EASTERN FERMENT: Oases of Culture: The French Schools in the Lebanon: Young Lebanese of all religions and all walks of society are finding a chance to know and respect one another in these French schools, as in the American University in Beirut, where they are also learnincr Western traditions of freedom and under- standing. The bridge they are building between East and West will stand amid the passionate conflicts of the Middle East.
PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIETY: Anxiety: Man's New Enemy: Under the many and often conflicting stresses of modern urban life, more than half the people in the advanced countries of the world suffer from anxiety. On these pages a typical sufferer describes the workings of his mind. A doctor comments on this personal account, explaining the causes of the patient's behaviour and pointing his way towards recovery.
ART IN EVOLUTION: Emile Bernard: Catalyst of Great Masters: Unknown to the general public, this painter of genius is one of the most curious phenomena in the history of modern art. At the age of twenty Bernard displayed so fertile an invention that he foreshadowed a host of 20th century movements; most astonishing of all, he sparked off in Gauguin, then aged forty, the style that was to become famous throughout the world. By Roy McMullen.
