Item description

Rare Packard and Ord Tiled Triangle Bookends Canterbury Tales Hand Painted circa 1940's The bookends are made of 3 ceramic tiles each and have felt lining to the base and back. The core, under the felt, feels solid and is probably ceramic as well. They are hand painted with vignettes of characters from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. One bookend features "The Sergeant At Law" and "The Wife Of Bath" and both are marked OR. The other shows "The Cook" and "The Pardoner" and they are unmarked. The two triangular tiles on top with paintings of dogs, are also unmarked. The bookends are very heavy, each weighs approx. 2 pounds, 12 ounces. Each measures 4 3/4" wide and 4 1/8" tall.
