At the "Latin American Art" auction Nov 19, 2020, by Morton Subastas, Monte Athos 179 Lomas de Chapultepec, México DF, a Phil Kelly painting sold for $13,735.00 USD ------------- Phil Kelly was born in Dublin in 1950. The Kelly family moved to Birmingham, where his father worked as an architect. Kelly's work is the work of an urban painter and many cityscapes of Mexico City; Kelly produced many striking figurative works, paintings of Oaxaca and Dublin, seascapes of Mexico and Cornwall, and many ink drawings. In 1985, a severe earthquake struck Mexico City, killing thousands of people, including his girlfriend, and destroying his home and all of his artwork. Grief-stricken, he retreated to England, but he missed the pulse, heat, and color of Mexico City and returned to the sprawling metropolis in 1989 and became a Mexican citizen in 1999. His paintings are exhibited regularly. His works are in several notable Mexican museums, including The Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City and The Museum of Modern Art of Oaxaca. In 1996 the Frederick Gallery in Dublin initiated Phil Kelly works exhibition, his first solo in 1997. Since then, regular exhibitions in 2000, 2002 and 2004 took place in Ireland and England. Various paintings and drawings have been used as artwork for books published in Mexico, Ireland, and in the U.K., and there are many pieces in private collections with several pieces selling at Christie's (1991 and 1992).
