Lenox China - Teddy Roosevelt Toby Mug/Jug/Pitcher Features Teddy Roosevelt grinning from behind a moustache and spectacles, sporting safari attire with belt buckle marked "T.R." In one hand is a book entitled, "Africa", in the other he holds a rifle. The handle is created in the form of an elephant's head and trunk. Approximate measurements: 7-1/2" Tall 7" Wide (from elephant trunk to hands) Base is approximately 5" x 4-1/2" Condition: Free from damage, no chips, hairlines, or breaks. There have been no repairs. Kovels: "The rare toby jug was designed by Edward Penfield, an illustrator and poster artist, and was made by Lenox in 1909 to commemorate Teddy Roosevelt's African safari and scientific expedition. The expedition lasted from April 1909 to March 1910 and was funded by Roosevelt, Andrew Carnegie, and the Smithsonian Institution. Over 11,000 animals were collected for the Smithsonian and the American Museum of Natural History in New York. While the expedition included equipment for hunting, trapping, and scientific purposes, Roosevelt also carried a rabbit's foot for good luck and a collection of leather-bound books that became known as the "Pigskin Library." Antiques Digest: "A portrait of Theodore Roosevelt hunting big game was made by Lenox at the close of Roosevelt's last term in office in 1909. It was designed by Edward Penfield and modeled by Isaac Broome and depicts Roosevelt in hunting costume with a book inscribed "Africa." The handle of the jug is an elephant's head, and the coloring and portraiture are good. Both the Roosevelt and Penn Tobies made at Lenox are well worth collecting for their fine workmanship and design as well as historical interest."
