The saguaro cactus silhouetted by lightning was taken one mile north of River Road, on the Hacienda del Sol Road, three miles north of Tucson in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, which are hidden by the fast moving thunderstorm. Summer lightning storms are most dramatic during July and August on the scenic desert near Tucson, especially after dusk. The trick is to have the scene such as a saguaro cactus chosen beforehand, as in this case, and to know most summer storms come from the east. As no meter reading could be recorded, the shutter was left open for a twenty-minute exposure to catch the lightning patterns at aperture of f.16. The photographer sees the desert as an ever-changing scene and summer storms one of his favorite subjects.Much patience and a bit of luck are also neccessary, as four hurried trips were made, camera set up and storm did not materialize to record on film. The fifth trip was a success, especially since very unusual horizontal bolts were captured on film.
