The pistols were signed in gold on the locks and in a gold ooincon in the breeches, and are presently in the gun collection of W. Keith Neal, Warminster, Wiltshire, England, who made the transparency. The barrel of each pistol is inlaid in gold: (left side) "1. A LA CIUDAD DE BUENOS AYRES AT GENERAL BELGRANO"; top) "2. A VEN-CEDOR EN TUCUMAN Y SALTA"; (right side) "3. A LA LIBERTAD DE LA PATRIA ESTABLECIDA". (Translation: "1. To the city of Buenos Aires and to the attention of General Belgrano; 2. To the conqueror in Tucuman and in Salta; 3. To the liberty of the established motherland".) After a successful insurrection against the ruling Spaniards by the Argentine Creoles led by General Manuel Belgrano, formal independence of the province of Buenos Aires was declared at Tucuman in 1816. Later, unification of Argentina was achieved under Juan Manuel de Rosas, who owned the pistols on the cover. He ruthlessly dominated the Argentine confederation for 23 years, when, in 1852, he was overthrown and fled the country in a British ship. The pistols were among possessions which he carried with him to England. The pistols are 18" long, weigh 3 lbs. each, and are cal. .65 with 101/2" smoothbore barrels. The mounts are silver, and goldplated silver, made by Moses Brent. The original rosewood case for these pistols bears the inscription "A su amigo Jn. MI. de Rozas". MAJOR ARTICLES.
