The range extends from northern Pakistan and northern Republic of India, Nepal, Bhutan. It generally occurs at lower altitudes than other pines in the Himalaya, from 500-2000 m, occasionally up to 2,300 metres Pinus roxburghii is a large tree reaching 30-50 m with a trunk diameter of up to 2 m, exceptionally 3 m. The bark is red-brown, thick and deeply fissured at the base of the trunk, thinner and flaky in the upper crown. The leaves are needle-like, in fascicles of three, very slender, 20-35 cm long, and distinctly yellowish green. (source: wikipedia.org) Thrives in a light well-drained sandy or gravelly loam. Succeeds on calcareous soils. Dislikes poorly drained moorland soils. Dislikes shade. Established plants tolerate drought. The chir pine is not very hardy in Britain, succeeding outdoors only in the mildest areas of the country. In the driest parts of its native range the leaves are shed after 10 - 11 months, making it deciduous. Trees are extensively tapped for their resin in India and are the main source of resin in that region. Plants are strongly outbreeding, self-fertilized seed usually grows poorly. They hybridize freely with other members of this genus. This species is closely related to P. canariensis. Leaf secretions inhibit the germination of seeds, thereby reducing the amount of plants that can grow under the trees. Plants in this genus are notably susceptible to honey fungus.
