COVER: Pope Paul VI: The Missionary Pope.
TOP OF THE WEEK:
THE COVER: From the informal encounter on the Air India jetliner (right) to the tumultuous scenes in the streets of Bombay, NEWSWEEK'S Rome bureau chief Curtis G. Pepper was with Pope Paul VI at every stage of his historic trip to India. From Pepper's reports RELIGION editor Kenneth L. Woodward wrote the story of the missionary Pope, who is still an enigma to his colleagues. Emmet John Hughes' analysis of the last session of the Vatican Council and of a church in transition rounds out the picture of a momentous year for the Roman Catholic Church. (NEWSWEEK cover photo by Werner Braun--PIP.).
THE GOP--NOW AND THEN: Just before Republican governors gathered in Denver last week to chart the party's future course, NEWSWEEK obtained a transcript of the last high-level GOP meeting--the famous "unity conference in Hershey, Pa., which took place last August. It gives a fresh insight into the recent campaign and a sense of the problems the GOP still faces.
POVERTY: OPENING SALVO: The drab headquarters of the Office of Economic Opportunity be- lies the high-powered salesmanship--and the message of hope-- that director Sargent Shriver brings to the Administration's avowed war on poverty. As OEO earmarks its first funds--a drop-in-the-bucket $35 million--Shriver discusses the program with NEWS- WEEKS Richard Stout. From Stout's report, and others around the country, Associate Editor Gerald J. Barry writes this week's SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS, a realistic appraisal of where the money is going and what the end result may be.
KIDS AND CARS AND AUTOCULT: They worship "hairy beasts" and "brutes," have nothing but scorn for "pigs," "gook wagons," and anything that smacks of "Mickey Mouse." They are the 1 million hot-rodders, a nationwide cult with a passion and a language all their own. To obtain the full flavor of "Autocult," LIFE AND LEISURE editor Harry Waters went to California--unofficial hot-rod headquarters--to talk with "pack leaders" and "customizers.
