COVER: The SINGLE PARENT. By 1990 Half of all American families may be headed by only one adult.
Cover: Photo of single parent Ellen Carillo-June and two of her children, Laura and Alexis, by Melchior DiGiacomo.
TOP OF THE WEEK [Major Top Stories]:
A HEROES' WELCOME: Capt. John Testrake (above) and the 38 other passengers and crewmen of TWA Flight 847 returned to a heroes' welcome last week. But seven Americans and five other Westerners remained captive in Lebanon, and the Reagan administration was working to get Syria's cooperation in resolving the "other" hostage crisis. Page 18.
THE WORLD OF SINGLE PARENTS: One out of every four households with children is headed by a single parent--and by 1990 the figure could double. The experts are only now beginning to measure the trend's impact on society, but the early diagnosis clearly indicates psychological stress for both parents and kids. Nonetheless, parents and their offspring are learning to cope, and the redefinition of the wholesome, all-American family to include single mothers like Jeanne Buff (right, with her children) has already begun. Page 42.
GORBACHEV SPRINGS SOME SURPRISES: Mikhail Gorbachev delivered some surprises last week. He named an ally, Eduard Shevardnadze, foreign minister, replacing Andrei Gromyko, the new chief of state. He also agreed to meet with Ronald Reagan in Geneva before Thanksgiving. U.S. officials hailed the proposed summit but were careful not to arouse too many expectations about its results. Page 30.
'AEROSPACE VALLEY': Thanks to the surge in defense spending, California's sun-baked Antelope Valley is booming, producing both military aircraft and daring experiments like the Beech Starship (left). Page 56.
ROCKING FOR AFRICA: Not just another concert, this week's LIVE AID benefit will feature the world's top rock stars (including Mick Jagger), reach 1.5 billion people and raise millions for famine relief. Page 52.
