COVER: "Secrets of Sleep".

TOP OF THE WEEK [Major Top Stories]:
THE MYSTERIES OF SLEEP: A third of life is spent in the mysterious nether-world called sleep. But as many as 50 million Americans don't sleep as well as they should. Some doze only fitfully, others too much; some stop breathing many times each night. Medical research is beginning to reduce the dangers and suffering of sleep disorders, but it has yet to find real cures. For that matter, doctors don't even know what functions sleep serves. It's only clear that when something goes wrong with the mechanism, life can be pretty miserable. Page 48.
ISRAEL VEERS RIGHT: Both-Prime Minister Menachern Begin and Labor Party leader Shimon Peres claimed victory in Israel's closely fought election, but Begin (right) was favored to form a new government--a coalition dominated by hard-liners on the West Bank issue. The vote reflected the country's hawkish mood and the growing political clout of Israel's Sephardic Jews. Page 32.
FOR BETTER AND FOR WORSE: Despite the high divorce rate, more Americans than ever are marrying--and the majority of marriages don't end in the divorce courts. "Long marriage is a larger phenomenon than we think," says Harvard sociologist Mary Jo Bane; Some marriages endure because of sheer inertia, or for the sake of the children, and eventually settle into a kind of joyless longevity. But with a little bit of luck, hard work and sometimes a bit of counseling, many others ripen into deeper understanding, with a lasting glow of love and companionship. Page 73.
