MAE COKER (1883-1988):
Mae Coker lived most of her life in Northern California, specifically the seaside town of Santa Cruz. Its grand seascapes and forest inlands gave her inspirational subject matter. She painted landscapes, seascapes and still life works. In the early 1960s Mae Coker was active in promoting local art through clubs, art festivals and gatherings. She was very active in both the Santa Cruz Art Club, as well as the renowned Santa Cruz Art League which began in 1919, and welcomed female artists.
In 1969 The Santa Cruz Sentinal wrote, "Artist Mae Coker is inviting the public to an open house at her studio, and will have more than 50 paintings on display and says she will be happy to greet her friends. The public is invited. Mrs. Coker, an 87-year-old grandmother, still is painting prolifically. Perhaps to make up for her late start at the age of 72. She actually began painting when she retired and came to Santa Cruz. A native California, her profession for many years was that of a dramatic reader and she traveled all over the United States. She believes that drama and art are closely associated and calls painting "talking on canvas." She took her first art lesson at the local SCO, but credits a course she took in painting and felt pen drawing from Fred Colbus with teaching her the fundamental of art. But the style she has developed is definitely her own. She uses a wet-on-wet technique and a palette knife to produce subtly impressionistic paintings of old landmarks. Mrs. Coker has exhibited all over California and her awards include prizes in many of the juried shows which she has entered. A past president of the Santa Cruz County Art Club, she also is a member of the Santa Cruz Art League."
