Upper grade school plus fiction from the 1960s. These titles were sold through the Young America Book Club.
The Bells of Freedom (1963 ? Macrae Smith Company no ISBN, LCCN: 63-19672) Jeb Crane was kidnapped, then sold into indentured servitude in colonial Boston to a cruel owner. However, a kind Mr. Box bought his contract to teach him the printer?s trade. As a larger portion of the colonists defied British rule, Jeb made friends with some of the rebels while Mr. Box remained a confirmed Tory. 191pp.
Gull Number 737 (1964 ? Thomas Y. Crowell Company No ISBN. LCCN: 64-16531) Luke Rivers was with his father, the head of Sea Bird Lab, holding a sea gull egg. The egg hatched in his hand and ?Spacecraft? (Gull number 737) was looking at Luke as his mother. 208pp.
Tomas Takes Charge (1966 ? Lothrop, Lee Shepard Company, Inc. No ISBN. LCCN: 66-14611) This is a very engaging story about what might happen if two kids' father never returned home. They lived in the city on Manhattan, and are afraid of Welfare, which is going to take charge of them if they are found without parents. They pretend they are going to their "godmother's" house in Brooklyn. But, they move into the upper story of a building of which only the ground floor is used. How can they survive and stay together? 191pp.
Hardcovers with illustrated cloth boards, but no DJs. Prior Owner?s name in front pages (Bells has an Ex-Libris sticker), adds no value. Square corners with minor edge-wear. Interiors are otherwise tight, clean, and text unmarked.
? Size: 8vo ? over 7 - 9? tall, 590pp.
? Condition: 3 separate Very Good Hardcovers, no Dust Jackets ? Prior Ownership markings add no value. Young America Book Club Edition. Always Privately Owned.
Copyrights given above. All printed in U.S.A. All are Book Club Editions. No Print-run info found. LCCNs given above. No ISBN nor MSR.
Notes on Condition/Edition ratings:
Fine ? means like new, but any book produced over 10 years ago isn't ?brand new? or even ?new.? Using the same term as coin collectors, ?can?t guarantee it is uncirculated, but it looks very much like it could be.? Booksellers need similar word to describe this...
Like New ? A new book, no marks no damage (except maybe remainder marks or shelf-wear) except not obtained directly from the publisher or in packaging from the publisher. Same sort of thing about grading as Fine above except generally used for newer publication dates for titles still in print.
Good ? How someone else might take care of a book. Also referred to as ?standard.? This is the most likely condition for books of this age title, shows the book has been read or previously owned.
Acceptable ? How a young child, student or a librarian might take care of a book. (Either trying to make sure someone doesn't steal it by plastering ownership everywhere, filled it with copious notes or a book that has been damaged.)
Poor ? Combination of ?acceptable? factors above. Most likely with water damage as well. Might have missing pages (you should ask). Usually requires repair to be usable.
Near ? Means ?almost? in an optimistic sense. e.g., ?Near Fine? means very good, but on the high end.
1st Thus ? Unique somehow, maybe 1st paperback, new illustrator, misprint or even the 1st edition. A collector might desire this copy for their collection.
