Item description
We offer here an interesting oversized photo-album accordian-fold souvenir of the Chalfonte Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ.
We found no date, but the automobiles pictured appear to be from the pre-WWI era. The Chalfonte was founded by Quakers after the Civil War as an alcohol-free retreat from the tribulations of the workaday world. It started out as a couple of grand hotels. It remains as an historic register destination in Cape May, in its orginal grandeur. Over the years, as Atlantic City grew in import, this hotel grew as well. Two extravagant houses became a mid-rise hotel.
By comparison with other items, the ediface shown dates to before 1907.
It was razed, finally, after moves and reincarnations, in 1980 as Atlantic City took on Las Vegas as a gambling mecca. And failed.
