Item description
GWELO GOODMAN:
South African Artist
by Joyce Newton Thompson
Foreword by E.F. Watermeyer
London/Cape Town: George Allen Unwin/Howard B. Timmon, no date, (circa 1951).
First edition.
Inscribed and SIGNED, and dated 1962, by the author to the inside front cover.
Enhanced with sixteen color plate illustrations and with monochromes of the artist's oil paintings.
A chronicle of the artist's works, not only as a painter, but also as an architect, together with a biography of his life.
Goodman not only depicted the South African landscape, buildings, flora and fauna, mines, mountains, and waters edges, but promoted and aided the South African culture, celebrations, and was outspoken about teaching methods used in South African art schools.
Thompson presents insights on the artist's unique style, influences, techniques, career, and life.
Tan offsetting, from a previous newspaper clipping, the front end-paper, else very good in beige linen with gilt embossed titles to the front cover and to the spine; in a very good dust jacket with creased short edge tears, and with mild soiling two minor ink-marks and a three-inch tear to the rear panel; original "Standard edition 63/-" price still intact to the front inner flap.
Quarto; 152 pages; list of awards and galleries, exhibitions list; list of works privately owned; and index.
Elusive SIGNED.
An impressive gift.
