When you see the Green printed "England 1883" those pieces were made in manufactured or "crafted" as they liked to say in China because manufacture of ware under the Johnson Brothers name was transferred to China. In 2015 the use of the name was discontinued. Just a quick note--more for me than anyone, I see that a lot of people say that Johnson Brothers is Porcelain, Bone China or a mix of those and ceramics. There is a site called A-Z of Stoke-on-Trent Potters and they document everything. This being said, here is a tad bit of history: In 2003 manufacture of ware under the Johnson Brothers name was transferred to China. In 2015 the use of the name was discontinued. Earthenware and Sanitary ware manufacturers at a number of factories in Hanley and Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, England. There were four 'Johnson Brothers' - Alfred, Frederick, Henry and Robert - sons of Robert Johnson and grandsons of the famous Meakin pottery family lineage. In 1883 Alfred and Frederick took over the Charles Street Works, Hanley from Pankhurst Co. and began manufacturing durable earthenware, which they called 'White Granite'. In 1888 by their brother Henry joined the business. In addition to manufacturing white ware, they began producing under-glaze transferware for which they became famous. Due to the increased demand for pottery in North America, they opened up additional factories. AS IS AS SHOWN----Please take a look at the pictures for the best description.
