Produced during the golden age of Las Vegas' history, this iconic poster produced by Transworld Airlines (TWA) promotes the nightlife, gambling, and distinct culture that had evolved in the city during the post-war era. As the nation experienced a period of economic prosperity in the 1950s, by the 1960s, Las Vegas had become a popular destination for tourists that flocked to the casinos and enjoyed concerts by some of the most famous performers of the time, including the so-called Rat Pack featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Joey Bishop. In the 1960s, corporations and businesses began buying property and constructing large casinos and hotels on what would come to be known as the Las Vegas Strip.
American entrepreneur Howard Hughes was highly influential at this time, and the city's distinct architecture would go on to inspire postmodern design across the globe, which would transform the skylines of numerous cities in the 1970s and 1980s. Hughes acquired control of TWA in 1939 and grew the company which was given vast government contracts to fly internationally during World War II with the Army Air Force's Air Transport Command. This poster was illustrated by noted American commercial artist David Klein who came to prominence during the 1950s.
Klein's most recognized work was produced for TWA during this time in what is now called the jet age. He also produced illustrations during his military service. Klein's distinctive aesthetic and unique style is highly evocative of the era and is immediately recognizable.
