The years following the conclusion of World War II marked a new period of economic prosperity coupled with advances in aviation technology that occurred during the conflict, and a new era of air travel had been ushered in by companies like Transworld Airlines (TWA) enabled travelers to explore international flights with updated amenities. They were the first airline to offer in-flight movies in 1961. Produced in 1956, this illustration by noted American commercial artist David Klein bears a distinctive aesthetic and iconic style that would influence the world of graphic design for decades. As America approached the so-called jet age of the 1960s, air travel became known as a sophisticated way for people to enjoy the skies.
Klein's work, including this iconic piece, is even included in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City as part of their permanent collection. This piece which shows one of the most recognizable parts of New York City, Times Square, at the height of its popularity as the intersection of entertainment, tourism, and business. Times Square is the heart of the Broadway entertainment district, and prior to his work for TWA, Klein had become the preferred illustrator for Broadway productions. He created some of the most recognized posters for plays like Death of a Salesman and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
This piece immediately transports the viewer back in time and creates a bond between the past and present while capturing one of the most transformative times in American history.
