Born Virne Beatrice Mitchell, she was more commonly known by her nickname “Jackie” and would go on to become one of the first women to play professional baseball. Mitchell is pictured here among some of the most iconic ballplayers, including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Also present is Joe Engels, who was the owner of the Chattanooga Lookouts. The Lookouts was the first team Mitchell played for.
This photograph was taken following a game where Mitchell struck out Gehrig and Ruth, which would forever cement her in the history of baseball. As a child, Mitchell's next-door neighbor, Dazzy Vance, taught her how to pitch and helped her develop a breaking ball.Vance would later be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Mitchell was only the second woman ever to be signed professionally to a Baseball team, though her contract would be voided and a gender restriction placed on Major League teams. Her legacy remains an early example of the feminist movement during the early portions of the twentieth century. Mitchell continued to play professionally with a barnstorming team called the House of David and would play until her retirement in 1937.
This photograph remains an enduring image that captures the essence of sports and entertainment. It features a distinctive style and unique aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This work is also an authentic piece of American history that highlights the camaraderie and community that sports contribute.
