Located on the western banks of the Connecticut River, the Lynde Point Lighthouse remains one of the most iconic nautical features of the Northeastern United States. It bears a distinctive, historical aesthetic that hearkens back to its early days, allowing vessels to navigate the Long Island Sound without the risk of damaging hulls or running ashore. The light was first lit after construction was completed in 1839, and it featured a six-room keeper's quarters which was eventually replaced in 1933. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 for its "superior stone work in the tapering brownstone walls."
The lighthouse was fueled by whale oil until it converted to kerosene in 1879, before making the final conversion to electricity in 1955. Sailors criticized the initial height of thirty-five feet for not providing a long enough range in foggy conditions or at night. The house's location in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, illustrates the region's links to the earliest European settlements in North America. Dutch settlers arrived in the area as early as 1624, and the region remains home to some of the most historic architecture and sites of battles during the Revolutionary War.
This photograph's iconic aesthetic and historical details immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating a bond between the present and the past and allowing the viewer to gain a new perspective on how culture has evolved since our nation's earliest years. This is an authentic piece of American nautical history.
