Item description

Born in 1891 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Pedro Albizu Campos became a leading figure in the Puerto Rican struggle for independence during the twentieth century. He graduated from Harvard Law School with the highest grades in his class and became the President of the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico from 1930 until his death in 1965. Campos volunteered with the United States Army Infantry during World War I, and he was assigned to the 375th Division. His experiences in the Army led to his call for Puerto Rican independence from American rule. During his time at Harvard, Campos became interested in freedom movements in India and met with international figures like Subhas Chandra Bose and Hindu poet Rabindranath Tagore. Campos also became a vocal supporter and advocate for Irish freedom from British rule and helped draft the constitution of the Irish Constitution. Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony for nearly four hundred years and achieved colonial autonomy in 1898. Despite this, the United States claimed the island under the Treaty of Paris, which marked the conclusion of the Spanish-American War. Puerto Ricans have had American citizenship since 1917, though they are disenfranchised at the national level and cannot vote in Presidential elections. Campos called for armed uprisings and began planning a revolution in 1950 which led to his arrest and imprisonment for twenty-six years. He was arrested for attempting to overthrow the US Government, and he remains an enduring symbol of Puerto Rican resistance and freedom efforts globally.
