This iconic image was taken by one of the most prominent female photographers, Dorothea Lange, and captures migrant laborer Florence Owens and her two young children during the Great Depression. The Great Depression disrupted America's economy following the stock market crash in 1929, which sent the nation into an economic slump that would last for several years. This, combined with the Dust Bowl, caused many rural Americans located in states like Oklahoma to migrate west, looking for work in the vast farms of California, which remain a significant agricultural producer to this day. These migrants were immortalized in several pieces of literature and film produced in the following years.
The Farm Security Administration employed Lange to document the United States during the Great Depression, and her work is known for humanizing the effects of this period on working-class Americans who were the most heavily impacted during this period. Lange's work remains some of the most essential photography of the twentieth century. Owens was born in what was called Indian Territory before Oklahoma received statehood and was of Cherokee descent. This photograph was taken while Owens worked as a pea picker with her husband and seven children near Watsonville, California.
This distinctive image is one of the most recognized photographs of the era and immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This is an authentic piece of American photographic history that documents one of the most transformative moments in United States history.
