Item description

This photograph was taken between 1932 and 1934 of the infamous bank-robbing couple Bonnie and Clyde, who became known as some of the most prolific criminals during the Great Depression and captured headlines across America, gaining considerable notoriety during this transformative moment in American history. Bonnie Parker was born in Rowena, TX, in 1910 and, in her early years, dreamt of becoming an actress, though she would drop out of high school to engage in a brief marriage before returning to her parent's home. Clyde Barrow grew up in a poor farming family southeast of Dallas before turning to a life of petty crime that would escalate following a stint in prison. Mutual friends in Dallas introduced Bonnie and Clyde, and their first encounter established their relationship, which they maintained until they died in 1934 in Bienville Parish, Louisiana, when police ambushed the couple. The photo of the aftermath ambush remains one of the most recognized images of the era. It has come to signify then end of an era in American history where the outlaw became a symbol of rebellion during a period where the economic conditions in the United States were so severe that some saw a life of crime as the only alternative.
