Produced by the United States Navy only two years before its destruction by a thunderstorm off the coast of New Jersey on April 4, 1933, this photograph of the iconic Goodyear Zeppelin shows the aircraft docked near where it was manufactured in Akron, Ohio. The Goodyear Zeppelin used new technology featuring single-girder diamond trusses, radial wire bracing, and self-supporting frames. The zeppelin featured 110 fuel tanks, utilizing the inert gas helium instead of the highly flammable hydrogen, which was more commonly found as a fuel for these aircraft at the time. Additionally, the USS Akron featured a novel three-keel design, unlike vessels like the Hindenburg, Graf Zeppelin, and Graf Zeppelin II.
The USS Akron used Goodyear rubberized cotton as a skin which was heavier and cheaper than the goldbeater's skin that was used on similar airships at the time. At the center of the USS Akron's design was the airplane hangar and trapeze system, which was designed to accommodate five F9C airplanes that were used for long-range naval scouting and military intelligence. On November 2, 1931, the USS Akron completed its maiden voyage down the eastern seaboard toward Washington, D.C., with over two hundred passengers to demonstrate the ability to rapidly deploy troops to remote outposts in emergency situations.
This iconic photo captures the USS Akron in a glorious moment above the Goodyear hangar during a period of transformation in the region as the company expanded and attracted residents eager for work in the rubber factory.
