Item description

This painting is based on the noted sculpture by Utah-born artist Cyrus Edwin Dallin who created some of the most iconic depictions of the American southwest during his illustrious career. Dallin studied in Boston and Paris before returning to the United States, and his works include the Equestrian Statue of Paul Revere as well as the work featured here, The Appeal to the Great Spirit, which welcomes visitors at the front of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. This work was the last of a series produced by Dallin called The Epic of the Indian and also includes A Signal of Peace, The Medicine Man, and Protest of the Sioux. The Appeal to the Great Spirit was produced in Paris and won a gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1912. The statue was originally intended to be a temporary installation though it became associated with the Boston MFA and was never removed. Dallin reversed efforts to remove a light green patina that had developed on the work, instead preferring this natural process to the brown preservative that conservatorships often coated statues with. The piece has been frequently reproduced in both full-scale and model proportions as well as paintings like this work that was completed in 1921. Dallin's upbringing in Utah and interactions with indigenous people during this time influenced his work, and he remains one of the most respected artists to represent the America Southwest. This painting immediately connects the viewer to the past and creates a powerful bond.
