Taken by noted photojournalist and antarctic explorer Frank Hurley this iconic image captures Shacleton's boat, the Endurance, trapped in ice and propped up by two boards with two sailors still onboard. Irish-born explorer Ernest Shackleton was a principal figure during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Shackleton's efforts contributed significantly to the exploration and discovery of some of the most remote areas of the planet amidst some of the harshest conditions. The Endurance remained trapped in pack ice before ultimately sinking into the Weddell Sea after two months. Hurley ventured to Antarctica numerous times and ultimately spent more than four years traveling to the continent and documenting these adventures with historical photographs.
This vintage photograph remains one of the most critical images from the 1914 journey and has become emblematic of the spirit of these early twentieth-century explorers and their intrepid spirit. The unique style and classic aesthetic immediately transport the viewer back in time and creates an indelible bond between the past and present. Hurley was the official photographer for Shackleton's expedition, and he produced a prolific amount of material. On a previous trip, Hurley filmed and produced a documentary titled Home of the Blizzard.
This vintage photograph gives a glimpse into the rugged conditions that these explorers endured on these trips and how prevailing over them became part of their daily activities. Shackleton and his crew remained trapped in ice until they could launch their lifeboats for an arduous five days at sea before arriving at Elephant Island.
