Captured here sewing the suffragist's flag, this iconic image of early women's rights activist Alice Paul depicts her in a pivotal moment in the fight for the right to vote. Inspired by early advocates for women's rights, including Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Lucretia Mott, Paul was President of the National Woman's Party for five decades. Throughout her career, she advocated for peaceful protests and was arrested numerous times. Her actions would inspire later demands for equality during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and she was a critical figure in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which remains one of the most significant pieces of federal legislation of the nineteenth century.
She earned a master's degree in political science, economics, and sociology from the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from the Washington School of Law at American University. This vintage photo of Paul remains an important piece of the early women's movement and shows a dedicated Paul as the fight to gain the right to vote was nearly complete in 1919. Her work remains an inspiration to women around the world as they look to gain equality, and she remains an enduring symbol of the fight for women's rights.
Paul worked tirelessly throughout her career to get women equal rights under federal law. This image is an important piece of women's fight for equality and remains one of the most iconic images from the era of one of the most prominent figures.
