Though the first known settlements in Atlantic City are unknown, it was not until the 1850s that the town became a destination for tourism and resorts for residents of the Northeast. The first commercial hotel, The Belloe House, was constructed in 1853. The following year the city was incorporated, and service began on the Camden and Atlantic Railroad, which spurred the tourism economy and furthered growth in the area. The first boardwalk was built in 1870 with the original intention to help hotel owners keep sand out of their lobbies, though the small shops and attractions that lined them would go on to become an iconic feature of Atlantic City and bring visitors to stroll and enjoy.
Produced and published by one of the most prominent lithography firms of the era, Hughes Bailey, this bird's eye perspective captures Atlantic City in a period of significant growth and prosperity during the early twentieth century. O.H. Bailey was a prolific cartographer whose career spanned more than five decades and began producing panoramic maps across Massachusetts and Connecticut to attract residents and merchants alike that were eager for economic opportunities spurred on by the industrial revolution.
Bird's eye perspectives were widely popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and bear a distinctive style and aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This map is a unique piece of American cartographical history that shows Atlantic City in its biggest boom.
