Taken and published by noted American photographer George R. Lawrence, this iconic picture illustrates the significant transformation the United States was undergoing in the early parts of the twentieth century as advances in technology during the industrial revolution transformed urban environments while more rural settings remained more traditional. Lawrence was born in 1868 and would work extensively to produce balloons and other flying vehicles to produce panoramic photographs before working in the early aviation photography field as one of the first to adopt the form. In 1900 Lawrence built the world's largest camera to capture the Alton Limited Train, which was displayed at the Exposition of Paris in the same year.
There were numerous advances in washing technology throughout the nineteenth century though hand washing was still largely practiced during the early portions of the twentieth century. Some historians link advances in domestic work to the early stages of women's liberation movements as they were able to focus on education and other pursuits with these developments. Washing tubs were commonly found in households across the nation in 1905, and this iconic image perfectly captures the era and the nature of daily life at the time.
This is an essential piece of historical photography that perfectly captures the time and creates a bond for the viewer between the past and present. Lawrence's work remains some of the most innovative of the time, and his influence can be seen in other works by photographers who advanced aviation photography throughout the twentieth century.
