Produced and published by the Detroit Publishing Co. in 1903, this depiction of San Juan, Puerto Rico, shows the iconic city in a period of significant transformation and growth following the conclusion of the Spanish-American War in August of 1898. Puerto Rico had been under Spanish colonial rule since the early eighteenth century and had become a central hub for trading between the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. Spain ceded the island to the United States later in 1898, and Puerto Rico officially became an American Territory with a growing economy and conflicts over demands for independence countered by efforts to be recognized as an American state.
In the early twentieth century, Puerto Rico remained primarily agrarian, and a burgeoning economy based on tourism was emerging during this time. Puerto Rico is also home to numerous military bases and forts. This photograph features an ox-drawn carriage that illustrates the transition the island was experiencing in this time period as the industrial revolution was making leaps and bounds in the Northern Hemisphere. Advances in automobile and aviation technology would transform Puerto Rico and the rest of the world in this pivotal moment.
The minimal aesthetic and distinctive black-and-white tones of this photograph make it immediately recognizable and transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present while illustrating the way Puerto Rico has evolved and developed since the early 1900s. This is an authentic piece of photographic history that shows San Juan in a transformative time.
