Item description

This portrait of the noted Underground Railroad leader and iconic Harriet Tubman was created in 1895. It remains one of the most enduring and iconic images of the woman who helped bring enslaved people to free states before the abolition of slavery following the conclusion of the American Civil War in 1865, after decades of political debate finally erupted into a clash between the Union and Confederate states in 1861. During the Civil War, Tubman served as an armed scout and spy for the Union forces and, in her later years, was a fervent advocate for the women's suffrage movement, which had gained significant traction during the latter portions of the nineteenth century. Tubman was profoundly religious and practiced as a Methodist, believing it was her duty to God to help free enslaved people. Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland before escaping to Philadelphia in 1849. After her escape, Tubman became instrumental in returning to the South and bringing enslaved people to freedom through the network of abolitionists who formed the Underground Railroad and would hide and house enslaved people as they made their way from the South to free states in the North as well as Canada. This image bears a distinctive style with a rarified air that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present and capturing Tubman's legacy during the latter portions of her life as she advocated for the nascent Civil Rights movement.
