With the discovery of oil in 1882 and completed railways, Los Angeles was booming in the 1890s. Edward Doheny’s discovery set off a blaze of drilling in Los Angeles and neighboring Santa Barbara County. The population of Los Angeles would grow from five thousand in 1890 to over one hundred thousand in 1900. Spurred by the discovery of oil, the city also had a thriving port and was surrounded by productive farmland and cattle ranches. This period of industrial and economic growth allowed the city to compete with San Francisco in terms of port activity and capital investment. By 1923 Los Angeles produced nearly one-quarter of the world’s crude oil.
Oil speculation and drilling made millionaires overnight, and these oil barons began to transform the city from a sleepy pueblo sparsely populated with rough and tumble oil miners into the gem of the West Coast. Though Doheny made the discovery, it would be JP Getty whose name would eventually mark many of the largest and most prominent civic buildings.
With the oil fields producing so well, the city was able to establish more industries and became a hub for fashion, jewelry, and eventually, the entertainment industry. The combination of oil fields, a bustling port, and consistently good weather, Los Angeles attracted workers from across the world, making it one of the most diverse cities in the United States.
Map shows Los Angeles as seen from the Electric Power House corner of Wilder St. and Central Ave. looking north. -- Southern part of Los Angeles, looking south from corner of Tenth and Pearl Streets.
