Item description

Produced following the conclusion of the American Civil War, this bird's eye perspective was published by one of the early pioneers of the form Albert Ruger. Ruger was the first American cartographer to achieve success with the bird's eye perspective style, which would go on to become one of the most popular ways to entice residents and merchants alike by stylizing a city's economic, civic, and natural features. The reconstruction era of the United States was marked by a significant migration of Americans from the South to the North, eager for opportunities in the burgeoning manufacturing facilities that were being established in towns and cities across the nation. Ruger's unique style and distinctive aesthetic immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating a bond between the past and present. Geographically divided by the Saginaw River, the first European settlers arrived in 1831, though by the time of this publication, it had experienced significant growth and transformation as robust shipbuilding and lumber milling economies attracted immigrants from Germany and other Western European nations that established neighborhoods and communities on cultural traditions and heritage, many of which exist to this day. Bay City features numerous homes that were built by industrialists during this time which are registered historic landmarks. This is truly a piece of American cartographical history that depicts Bay City in one of its most transformative periods. This map is one of Ruger's earlier works and illustrates his style and attention to detail with minimal flourishes.
