Item description

Commissioned by the Texas State Legislature in 1886, this painting by William Henry Huddle remains one of the most iconic pieces of the state's rich history and evolution, as the region was heavily disputed territory as both an independent republic and territory governed by Spanish, Mexican, and American sovereignty. This distinctive painting is displayed at the Texas State Capitol. It is one of the most remarkable pieces commissioned by Huddle, who also created a painting of one of the most recognized figures in Texas history, Davy Crockett, which is also displayed in the Capitol as a tribute to the early leader in Texas's' fight for independence and eventual inclusion into the United States. Huddle was born in Virginia and studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City before moving to Texas after the conclusion of the American Civil War. Santa Anna was a prominent Mexican soldier, politician, and political leader during the nineteenth century and served as the eighth President of Mexico, whose reign is referred to as "The Age of Santa Anna," following the nation's independence. Santa Anna's role as a politician is unique in that he frequently switched political ideologies and adapted his vision, gaining power under conservative and liberal parties. This painting, a depiction of Santa Anna signing a peace treaty that dictated the Mexican Armies removal from the territory of Texas, is a significant piece of Texas history. It marks a turning point in the state's and nation's history, and Huddle's portrayal of this event remains one of the most distinguished pieces of Texas history.
