Item description

Located on the western shore of Lake Michigan at the Sheboygan River mouth, the city remains one of the most recognized cities that border the Great Lakes. Sheboygan, Wisconsin was experiencing a period of significant growth and transformation as the nation neared the turn of the twentieth century. During the early part of the nineteenth century, the city was primarily inhabited by immigrants from New York and New England who established logging operations that would ship lumber across the Great Lakes to markets in the Northeast. These communities established numerous neighborhoods, and Sheboygan was thriving by the 1880s as the nation experienced a period of considerable prosperity some two decades after the conclusion of the American Civil War. This bird's eye perspective was produced and published by one of the most prolific cartographers known for the style, Henry Wellge, who, along with four other producers, created more than half of all bird's eye perspectives found in the permanent collection in the Library of Congress. Unlike some other producers of the form, Wellge's panoramic maps used a subdued, elegant palette rather than bold colors that gives his work an elevated appearance and distinctive aesthetic that is easily recognized. Bird's eye perspectives immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present while illustrating how a region has grown and transformed throughout history. The prosperity created during the industrial revolution of the late nineteenth century created opportunities for towns like Sheboygan to expand and establish thriving economies.
