Item description

Produced and published by prominent American lithographer and illustrator Albert Ruger, this stunning depiction of the Capital of Georgia, Atlanta, shows the city in a period of significant transition following the conclusion of the Civil War. From 1860 to 1870, the population had more than doubled to over 33,000. As rebuilding efforts were underway, construction jobs were booming, and many displaced southerners flocked to the city eager for work. This boom made Atlanta the cultural, industrial, and economic center for the American South. The following decade would see the establishment of numerous Universities and colleges which would go on to become some of the oldest in the South. Bird’s eye perspectives were among the most popular illustration produced in the late nineteenth century through the 1920s. They were used as promotional tools for cities throughout the nation to attract workers and businesses. These maps would include prominent buildings, businesses, and places of note and were displayed by merchants and residents alike in a display of civic pride. During the Civil War, Atlanta had seen widespread destruction, and the process of rebuilding was spurring the population growth and allowing the city to re-define neighborhoods and establish communities. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, Atlanta had been an established railroad hub, and manufacturing, mills, and other industrial pursuits allowed the city to flourish as an economic powerhouse within the South. This depiction of the city in a transformative period of rebuilding is a genuine piece of American cartographical history. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed.
