Item description

Produced only three years after the conclusion of the American Civil War, this bird's eye perspective by Albert Ruger depicts Marion, Iowa, in a period of significant growth and transformation as residents and merchants flocked to the region eager for new opportunities as part of the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area. Ruger was an early pioneer of the form, and his unique style became widely popular during the middle portions of the nineteenth century, inspiring numerous other lithography firms to start producing and distributing panoramic maps across the nation to serve as marketing materials for growing towns and cities. During the nineteenth century, Marion's primary economy was based largely on agriculture and farming, especially corn farms, which thrived in the vast plains and prairies surrounding the city square. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, as manufacturing in the Midwest grew, the region was transformed and underwent another boom, with residents from Western Europe and the American South migrating to the city and establishing communities and neighborhoods based on cultural traditions, many of which exist to this day. Marion is home to the Granger House Museum, a traditional Victorian residence that offers a glimpse into daily life in the mid-1800s and is on the National Register of Historic Places. This bird's eye perspective bears a distinctive aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Ruger's works became the vanguard for the form and remain an authentic link in American cartographical history.
