Produced by one of the most noted and prolific mapmaking companies of the nineteenth century, the J.H. Colton Company, this depiction of China captured it during the latter stage of the Qing Dynasty, which was responsible for some of the most significant advances in modern technology including gunpowder and paper. Colton was born in Massachusetts and relocated to New York in 1831 to establish his lithography and cartography company, which produced maps using engraved steel plates instead of the less costly wax engravings that were more commonly found during the time.
The J.H. Colton Company created numerous types of maps, including travel guides, pocket maps, and atlases, which included this piece and have become significant pieces of American cartographical history. China was undergoing considerable transformation during the middle portion of the nineteenth century due to wars with the British and the French and internal rebellions, further weakening the military and state forces. Ultimately, China would lose both of these wars, resulting in a suffering economy and the ultimate success of overthrowing the Chinese Monarchy in 1912 and establishing the People's Republic of China.
Colton's productions bear a unique aesthetic and distinctive style that immediately transports the viewer back in time and provides a glimpse of the evolution and development of a country during some of its most transformative periods. China remains an influential nation with a rich history and distinct culture that has developed into a superpower in recent decades.
