Item description

Pictured here in the same year as his conviction and subsequent execution for his role in the rebellion of enslaved peoples and anti-slavery activists at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in the years leading up to the American Civil War, John Brown remains one of the most prominent and influential figures in the abolitionist movement of the mid-nineteenth century, and his strong Christian faith held the conviction that all men are created equal, which he felt mirrored the Declaration of Independence. Brown believed that merely talking about freeing enslaved people was not enough and advocated for rebellions that took action and led to his involvement in various rebellions, including Bleeding Kansas. Brown came to national prominence during the Bleeding Kansas incitement, a decisive moment within Kansas. The decision to enter the Union as a free state or slave state became a hot point among the residents in what was considered an internal Civil War in the years before the nation would break out in the American Civil War in 186. Brown also commanded forces at the Battle of Black Jack and the Battle of Osawatomie, and his actions helped galvanize public opinion in the years leading up to the war. This photograph remains one of the most iconic images of Brown and a testament to his legacy and influence, which would change the course of American history following his execution by the Commonwealth of Virginia after the raid at Harpers Ferry.
