Item description

This is a vintage 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy copy photograph (not a vintage original photo printed at the time it was taken) from the classic 1920's silent film historical drama/romance, DOROTHY VERNON OF HADDON HALL, released in 1924 by United Artists and directed by Marshall Neilan. In the year 1550, Sir George Vernon (Anders Randolf) agrees to have his young daughter, Dorothy (Mary Pickford) betrothed to Sir John Manners (Allan Forrest), the son of the Earl of Rutland (Wilfred Lucas). Sir George signs a contract, promising that the marriage will take place on Dorothy's 18th birthday, or else he will have to pay a large penalty to Rutland. But when the two children have grown older, rumors of John's wild behavior in France provoke Sir George to call-off the engagement, and to pledge his daughter instead to her cousin, Sir Malcolm (Marc McDermott). Rutland now claims the forfeit from Sir George, and meanwhile, John has befriended Mary Stuart (Estelle Taylor), the sworn enemy of Elizabeth (Clare Eames), who is now Queen of England. The image features a beautiful interior full-length shot of Dorothy Vernon (Mary Pickford) wearing a very ornate period English down with a large strand of pearls as she looks pleadingly at the viewer. Printed on single-weight stock with a glossy finish, most likely in the 1950's, this vintage copy photograph is in very fine- condition with a tiny chip on the tip of the top left corner. The image quality is very sharp with fine detail and beautiful, rich contrast. Provenance: The Collection of Robert Cushman. Mr. Cushman worked at the Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for many years and was a major private collector on and author about Mary Pickford.
