Brand new factory sealed dvd is Out Of Print in all formats and no longer being manufactured. This has been taken from original 35mm elements and is superior in quality than the double feature issues being offered including the Code Red one with 'Mark of the Witch'.
This features a sharp new anamorphic transfer that obviously blows past versions out of the water. One of the earliest horror films released on VHS back in the day, it went out of circulation for many years and earned an even bigger cult following by virtue of its unavailabilty.
When a small busload of psychologically unbalanced children en route to an institution crashes in the snow, it leaves the twisted tots free to roam the countryside at will. Accompanied by a slightly older psycho in nun drag, Hannah (Gail Smale), they find refuge at a nearby cabin where some twisted adults are busy getting drunk and acting out psycho-sexual parlour games of their own. Gene Evans stars as the mean rich businessman, bearded Papa Doc, Sorrell Booke (Boss Hogg from TV's 'Dukes of Hazzard) as a pathetic doctor, friend Shelley Morrrison ( TV's 'Will Grace) as well as mentally handicapped handyman John Durren (film's screenwriter) who likes rabbits, among others.
Soon the kids -- including wannabe actor David (future singer Leif Garrett) and firebug Susan (Tia Thompson) -- have wormed their way into the grownups' confidence and can murder at will with any tools they find handy, like an axe, a hammer, chains, and a piranaha are pretty memorable. They burn a woman alive and put a man inside a snowman. With a catfight, sex, synthesizer music, and some very discomforting scenes that place child actors in direct contact with nudity.
This presentation is bright, colorful and crisply detailed, and the pristine source element sports the original title sequence 'HORRIBLE HOUSE on the HILL', so don't be surprised by it. Other versions, including the aforementioned Code Red double feature has replaced the title sequence with the 'DEVIL TIMES FIVE' title card.
