Item description

Up for sale is a Crown of Thorns starfish. It received its name because of its resemblance to the crown of thorns placed on Christ's head before the Crucifixion. This starfish is native to coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region. On healthy coral reefs, the coral-eating starfish plays an important role, as it tends to feed on the fastest growing corals such as staghorns and plate corals, allowing slower growing coral species to form colonies. This helps increase coral diversity. However, outbreaks of this venomous invertebrate pose one of the most significant threats to the Great Barrier Reef. They are harvested in order to keep the population in check. These crown of thorns starfish are great for beach/ocean decor or as a conversation piece. **Please note these have a very fishy smell. According to Google, you can remove or decrease their odor by soaking them in a mixture of water and baking soda, water and 70% alcohol or water and bleach. Soak for 24-48 hrs then let dry in the sun.
