This British true first edition was the American publisher, E.P. Dutton's copy that was used to send to U.S. reviewers and special authors, prior to the American pressings; and bears Dutton's printed complimentary slip stapled to the half-title page, and the 'E.P. Dutton' name inked by publicist Barbara Woodward, to the title page.
Bark was a parliamentary correspondent for the BBC, a journalist, a fly fishing writer, and a mystery author most famous for the detecting novels featuring Mr. David Holmes, the Prime Minister's personal assistant.
This fifth Mr. Holmes mystery involves international spies, politics, the British secret service, bacterial weapons, murder, and more.
Offset rectangular age-toning to the end-papers as usual, else near fine in red linen boards with gilt embossed titles to the spine; in a very good slightly dust-soiled dust jacket with some tanning to the spine panel, small chips to the upper and lower spine ends and corner tips, a 1.5 inch tear to the upper front flap fold and a half-inch tear to the lower front flap fold; original printed 18/- net price still intact to the front inner flap.
