When farmers needed to store colostrum in times past, they usually had to resort to devices such as ice cream pails, pop bottles, and milk jugs. But no one put serious thought into the type of container best suited for the storage of this ?liquid gold? we call colostrum. As scientific testing increased our knowledge about the quality of colostrum, we learned how important it was to preserve (freeze) good-quality colostrum in sanitary conditions. Eventually, we discovered that equally important is the time used to thaw and warm the frozen colostrum to the desired temperature, as well as the way colostrum is administered to the calf. Obviously, no longer could we use the ice cream pail, pop bottle, or other containers directly as a feeding medium. Why? Because those containers were clumsy and ineffective. They were hard to clean, and it was difficult to properly warm their contents. Nor could calves feed directly from them. But we?ve worked tirelessly to overcome these problems.
