About The Record:
Sings Lullabys of Birdland, by Chris Connor, represents a whole series of firsts. Chris's first job singing with a trio, her first recording contract and her first long playing album. And there couldn't be a better send off all the way around. Listen especially to the swinging quality of I Hear Music and Come Back to Sorrento. What Is There to Say and Why Shouldn't I underline Chris's fine sense of dynamics. Lullaby of Birdland, done here at a slower tempo than usual shows off her warmth and projection; All About Ronnie and Spring Is Here are fine examples of understatement in a vocal style. Perhaps the strongest song in the album is Try A Little Tenderness, done almost sotto voice, with a restraint that gives this lovely ballad a tentative, wistful sound.
