Breitling In 1884 at St. Imier, in the Jura mountains of Switzerland, Leon Breitling opened a workshop specialized in producing chronographs and precision counters for scientific and industrial use. Upon his death in 1914, the company passed to his son Gaston who the following year created the first wrist chronograph and subsequently provided pilots with the first wrist navigation timepieces. The subsequent generation, Gastonâs son Willy Breitling, took over control of the company in 1932, and uder his watch, in 1936, Breitling become the official supplier to the Royal Air Force. In 1942 Breitling introduced the Chronomat, the first chronograph fitted with a circular slide rule bezel. The company also extended its clientele to include the American armed forces. 1954 marked the launch of what was to become another Breitling flagship model, the Navitimer, a wrist chronograph that facilitated navigation calculations. This model rapidly became a firm favorite among pilots across the globe, since by this time Breitling already was supplying most of the he major international airlines with cockpit clocks. In 1962, Astronaut Scott Carpenter wore the Cosmonaught chronograph during his orbital flight aboard the Aurora 7 space capsule. 1969 saw Breitling introduce the first ever self winding chronograph. This technical feat represented a major breakthrough for the entire Swiss watch industry, and represented a joint venture been several manufacturers. 1979 saw the takeover of Breitling from the founderâs grandson Willy by Ernest Schneider. In 1984 The Chronomat is relaunched and marks the return of the chronograph. It becomes the best selling line in the Breitling collection, a position it has held ever since. Today, Breitling is still established in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the town where Leon Breitling opened his first chronograph factory 110 years earlier. Â
