Antique Carte de Visite (CDV) Photograph. Annie Brightwood Newell (Married name: Smith). Photo by W.B. Miles studio, Holyoke, Massachusetts. This photo was originally part of Annie's personal collection of a couple dozen Carte de Visite (CDV) images of students and faculty from the school year 1881-1882 at Westfield Normal School. The school was founded in 1838 by noted educator and social reformer Horace Mann as the first public co-educational college in America without barrier to race, gender, or economic class. It is known today as Westfield State University. Annie was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Newell. She was born November 7, 1862 and died November 3, 1947. She is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in Westfield, MA. She was the wife of Edwin Jason Smith who was born February 21, 1857 and died April 24, 1934. He is also buried in Pine Hill Cemetery. The couple was married on October 28, 1885. They had at least two children named Livingston Newell Smith (1886-1953) and Harold Wells Smith (1890-1974.) Measures approximately 2.5 x 4.25 including mount. Verified as a student of the Westfield Normal School (Westfield, Massachusetts) In the institution's "Catalogue Circular, 1881/1882."
