SUMMARY: Andy Warhol began work on his Flowers series in the summer of 1964, making it the focus for his first exhibition with Leo Castelli in New York, autumn the same year. Very interestingly, unlike Warhol?s previous well known work drawing inpiration from mass media and commercial brands, Warhol utilised a photograph of seven hibiscus flowers taken by Patricia Caulfield from the magazine "Modern Photography" issue June 1964. Creating the composition for his own interpretation of the work, Warhol cropped Caulfield?s photograph into a perfect square, manipulating the flowers so that four of the original seven fit into this square configuration. Unfortunately this unauthorised use of Caulfield's photo eventually resulted in litigation when Caulfield filed a suit in 1966, which was ultimately settled by the two parties out of court. From this point onwards, Warhol only ever used photographs for his art that he took himself. An item of superb quality, it was commissioned by El Mundo of Spain in 2007. It bears the title and artist with year below the plate, and verso the support are corroborative details in Spanish, with reference catalogued in lead. Immediately 'ready for framing, the lithograph will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity detailing the origins of the item.
