IN THIS ISSUE:-
This description copyright Edward D Peyton. Any un-authorized use of this description is strictly prohibited.
COVER: The Blue Blanket, by Elias Rivera, 1995, oil, 70 x 52. Courtesy Rica Yares Galleries, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Scottsdale,
Arizona. Photo by Susan Contreras.
FEATURES:
METHODS MATERIALS: HOW TO GET STARTED IN PRINTMAKING by Christopher Willard.
EXPLORING THE VERSATILITY OF ACRYLICS by M Stephen Doherty. Because he uses acrylic paints and mediums, Alabama artist
Ronald Lewis can continually alter the colors and compositional elements in the interior scenes he creates from photographs and
sketches.
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: WORKING WITH WATERCOLOR WASHES IN MIXED-MEDIA LANDSCAPES by Jan Kirkpatrick. I invented my own
mixed-media process with watercolor washes that allows me to combine abstract collage elements with representational images of
Southwestern landforms.
USING LIGHT TO GIVE FIGURES MEANING by Jim Lynch. New Mexico artist Elias Rivera uses his knowledge of how light illuminates
forms to produce paintings that tell stories about the dignity and personality of his subjects.
THE PASTEL PAGE: CREATING RHYTHM WITH COLOR AND LINE by William A. Herring. I use a charcoal drawing to establish the
structure of a work and then add colors that are chosen arbitrarily to enhance these lines. Arranged according to temperature, the
colors act in conjunction with the lines to create a rhythm.
DRAWING THE FIGURE by Jacques Devaud, with Bonnie Iris. Drawing from life requires a combination of technical skill, empathy, and
sensitivity.
NUTS BOLTS: Resources and practical information for artists, plus an interview with a Puerto Rican couple who opened their own
gallery to showcase their work.
1997 DIRECTORY OF ART SCHOOLS WORKSHOPS: This is our 34th annual directory, the most comprehensive compilation of its kind.
In addition to hundreds of workshops featuring some of the most famous names in the field, we provide a list of important art
schools both here and abroad.
DEPARTMENTS:
WELCOME. LETTERS. EXHIBITS.
TECHNICAL PAGE by Jane Sutherland.
