COVER: Spring Afternoon, by Allan R. Banks, 1984, oil, 45 x 30. Private collection.
DANIEL SPRICK by Peter Eichner-Dixon. Working from life whenever possible, this Colorado artist creates still-life paintings of
objects that are specific enough to be understood without interpretation, yet are suggestive of an indefinite, symbolic
relationship.
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: JANICE ULM SAYLES. This Bedford, Massachusetts, artist has discovered the exciting range of watercolor
through discipline and perseverance.
ALLAN R. BANKS by Mark E. Stegmaier. Having been well trained by Richard Lack and R.H. Ives Gammell, both of the Boston School
of painting, Allan R. Banks executes strong portrait and landscape paintings directly from life.
HENRY CASSELLI by John R. Kemp. The 1974 article in American Artist that first presented the young, emerging Henry Casselli
suggested that great things could be expected from him. Now at mid-career, Casselli has fulfilled those expectations and is still
going strong.
TECHNIQUES OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING by Ron Norman. The author describes how he combines colored pencils and airbrushed
acrylics to achieve crisp foregrounds and atmospheric vistas in his landscape paintings.
ROBERT JESSUP by Jeanne Mackin. Although he begins each new painting without a conscious narrative or plot to guide the image,
Robert Jessup arrives at a picture filled with potent objects, expressions, and gestures that suggest an interpretation.
PEN INK: JOHN ANDERSON by M. Stephen Doherty. In this article, one of a series on pen-and-ink drawings, San Francisco artist
John Anderson describes how he creates his intricately detailed drawings of buildings.
A REPORT ON DISCIPLINE- BASED ART EDUCATION by Diane Casella Hines. The Getty Center for Education in the Arts has given its
support to a program aimed at improving the quality and status of art education.
